How are LAW ENFORCEMENT personnel so incompetent/stupid that they didn’t understand they were illegally disarming citizen when those citizens most needed to be able to defend themselves?

Even if the cops somehow magically made all the guns disappear from the hands of criminals and looters as well as regular folks, the end result would be that those intent on breaking the law would (1) arm themselves with clubs and knives or anything else at hand, (2) form gangs, and (3) prey on the now unarmed and defenseless citizens anyway.

Maybe law enforcement spends so much of its time with criminals and dirtbags that they forget the majority of citizens can be trusted to obey the law and do the right thing.

In another case, cops were engaged in a running gun battle at night. They were chasing a kid who they caught coming out burglarizing a house. They are literally running to chase down the burglar, who pauses periodically to shoot at them. The burglar got shot in the head while climbing over a fence. It turns out he was a mentally handicapped 14 year old. My classmates were OUTRAGED that the cops shot the poor kid in the head rather than the legs. I tried to explain how that would be both tactically unsound (when a guy has a gun in his hand and is shooting at you, shooting him in the legs might get you killed), as well pretty difficult (shooting at night, while running toward someone who is shooting at you, does wacky things to your accuracy). By the end of the class, it was apparent that I hadn’t convinced anyone. I’m guessing that the vast majority of lawyers, like these law students, don’t know enough about firearms to try a case involving them.
