RIP Billy Powell

I  missed this in the news yesterday. Thanks to a Marine Corps buddy of mine at a forum I frequent, I found out about it just now:

Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell dies

Billy Powell died Wednesday morning at his home in Orange Park, Fla. He was 56.

I think one of the Skynyrd songs that best showcases his talents is “Call Me The Breeze.”  Here they are performing it live in 1976.  Billy kicks in at about the 2:40 mark.  Awesome.

He was one of the greats, that’s for sure.

Call Me the Breeze is a great track, but I’m partial to “Swamp Music.” Billy rips both those songs to shreds.

RIP Billy, you were awesome. I’m sure you’ll have fun with the rest of the band up there. Now you have Keith Moon and John Bonham to sit in with you guys. And I’m sure it will be fun to jam with John Lennon too, especially since he was such a big fan of yours.

Looks like I should play some Skynyrd today in his memory.

Thanks for the post; I’m not sure I would’ve found out about it otherwise. Life is short, but 56 is too darn young.

I remember going to a Christian concert *years* ago and while the warm-up band was playing I thought, “wow, that pianist is *really* good and somewhat familiar”. Sure enough, it was Billy Powell. He talked for a bit afterward about coming to faith in Jesus Christ.

Rossington’s wife Dale said, “She said band members had long been worried about Powell’s health. “But he had such a big huge heart of gold, such a huge abiding faith in God and his savior Jesus,” she said.”

Very sad for his family, but I’m glad he had things right with his Maker before he died.
