Live From Phoenix…

March 30, 2009

On the road again…Maybe I’ll run into Charles Barkley while I’m out here and have some great stories to tell…

That’s Camelback Mountain from my hotel room balcony (on which much cigar smoking and bourbon drinking will occur this week).

Going to hike to the top tomorrow.  Supposed to be a 45-minute to one-hour hike, so I figure on taking lots of jerky and beer.  Don’t ever want to be caught out in the wilderness without those two staples.

If I survive I’ll post pics from up there looking down here.

The Dangers of Hunting

March 25, 2009

From Robb Allen, via Say Uncle:

It turns put that hunting is less dangerous than just about any other sport you can think of.  I didn’t see tiddly-winks on there, would that count as a sport?

And from comments at Unc’s place:

“Hemingway famously claimed that if it was safe, it wasn’t a sport, but mere athletics.”

Language Lesson

March 25, 2009

From Claire:

In a struggle for power, first seize the language

  • Enemy combatant America’s Partners in Disagreement
  • Capitalist Enemy of the PeePoles
  • Mandatory Volunteer
  • Anti-Business Green . . .

To  which I would add:

  • Jihadist Terrorist Militant
  • Illegal Immigrant Undocumented Worker
  • Illegal Immigrant Unbanked Worker
  • Illegal Immigrant Democratic Voter Block  Just don’t mention them anymore

Now, we officially have:

Global War on Terror Overseas Contingency Operation

STG, you CANNOT make this stuff up!

From The In-Box

March 25, 2009

To: Curtis Lowe

From: Some Guy

Subject: Ben – Don’t quit your day job!

“Yesterday Ben Bernanke, at one of those seemingly daily Congressional hearings (aka witch-hunts) on the financial crises,  said re: monies given AIG “We are confident we will be repaid..the taxpayers will make money“.

So far the Fed has advanced $182 billion, owns 80% of AIG and may advance another $30 billion more this year, so let’s say $210 billion of our hard earned dough goes to AIG; with a 6% yield means in 5 years AIG will pay us taxpayers $280 billion. So in 2014 the Fed gets $280 billion from what, selling AIG ????

AIG’s current market value is $4 billion. Is Ben predicting an average annual gain in market value of 133% per year? Wow! Call your broker NOW”

Quote of The Day

March 25, 2009

‘Corrupt, stupid grasping functionaries will make at least as big a muddle of socialism as stupid, grasping and acquisitive employers can make of capitalism.’ – Walter Lippmann

March 24, 2009

I found this at Mike The Marine’s place.

I, like him, do not normally go in for online petitions, but in this case I made an exception.  You should too.

Congressman John P. Murtha, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, was presented this week with the Department of the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award. The award, granted by the Secretary of the Navy, is the highest form of public service recognition bestowed by the Department of the Navy for a non-employee. It consists of a gold medal, miniature medal, lapel bar, rosette, and a certificate signed by the Secretary.

According to the Department, “nominations for this award will be limited to those extraordinary cases where individuals have demonstrated exceptionally outstanding service of substantial and long term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps, or as Department of the Navy as a whole.” Murtha was presented with the award in appreciation of his distinguished public service to the Department of the Navy.

And to quote Mike:

“The man willingly sold fellow Marines down the river with no regard for facts or due process. That he was given an award for “selfless devotion to the Nation’s Sailors and Marines” is unconscionable. He has broken the faith and is worthy by any measure of the title “EX-Marine” and all that entails.”

My signature, asking the Secretary of The Navy not to honor this piece of shit, was #29,170.  You can find the petition here.

No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

March 23, 2009

The tough, brave tree-huggers in Berkeley have struck again.  You know, the very people who enjoy the freedoms that the Marines and other service members protect on a daily basis…

From Michelle Malkin’s website:

Bastards: Vandals strike at Berkeley Marine recruiting center again

The attack shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday was caught of tape by a surveillance camera. About a half-dozen people wearing dark clothing with their faces covered are seen breaking windows and defacing the Marine Corps logo.

I notice they don’t do this when the Marines are actually present.  Might I suggest setting up a Marine Corps fire team in the lobby – and then telling them to enforce General Orders?

And especially to carry out the mission of the marine rifle squad:

To locate, close with, and destroy the enemy, by fire and maneuver, or repel the enemy assault by fire and close combat.

Yup…That about covers it.

“If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare… they may appoint teachers in every state… The powers of Congress would subvert the very foundation, the very nature of the limited government established by the people of America”
