in the spirit of this post…and now for a little thread hijacking 🙂 Curtis, what do you think is best all around choice for an evil black gun (if you’re only going to buy one): AR 15 family (comes in .223 or .308), extremely familiar to yours truly, widely available, inexpensive .223 ammo, lots and lots of options (everything from the latest piston operating systems to all the cool accessories to be mounted on a rail); or one of the newer types like the FN SCAR, new Sig 5.56, new Steyr bullpup, etc.?
Joe is right, go with the AR-15 family as that is what you know. Here is the cool part…even though you are only going to buy one, you can get a new upper in a different caliber for about $500-$600. So buy the AR-15 in .223 now and then save up and get an upper in .308. All the same bells and whistles will hang on it, and the lower is the serial-numbered “gun” so you can pick up a new upper at a gun show or even order on the internet and have it shipped. Best of both worlds.
Is this a great country or what?
Later, for fun and inexpensice shooting, you can get a .22 upper for even less and plink with it.

My 2 cents would be, go with what you are familiar with. With it coming in .308 I would give that a shot although I love the .223.
